Short Course on Waste-to-Energy Technologies for Sustainable Municipal Solid Waste Management
Date: June 29- July 1, 2022

Introduction
Islamic University of Technology (IUT), a subsidiary organ of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has been established with an aim to develop the vast human resources of the Member States of OIC. The objectives of the University include imparting education and training, conducting research and upgrading the manpower at different levels to international standards.

In order to achieve these objectives, IUT offers a number of regular courses at various levels leading to the award of Degrees and Diplomas in the fields of Engineering and Technologies, and Technical & Vocational Education. In addition to these core programs, the University also organizes national and international Short Courses, Seminars, Workshops, etc. to upgrade and update the skill and knowledge of professionals at different levels and to share technical know-how among the professionals of the Member States.

Course Objectives
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management is becoming one of the most challenging tasks for developing countries. MSW management in developing countries is mostly traditional (open dumping), which cause public health risk and threat for the environment. Therefore, modernization of MSW management is urgently required. Mounting land scarcity issue around the world makes the Waste-to-Energy strategy for MSW management in urban areas as a promising option, because this not only reduces the land pressure and public health problems but also generates electricity, heat, and green jobs. The course aims at updating delegates in the most recent Waste-to-Energy technologies. This course provides both technical personnel and decision-makers in the field an extensive overview supported by updated reference materials.

Course Outline
This course will cover the following topics:
- Municipal Solid Waste management in developing countries: An overview
- Municipal Solid Waste management options
- Municipal Solid Waste characterization
- Waste-to-Energy options
- Incineration
- Anaerobic digestion
- Gasification
- Pyrolysis
- Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF)
- Sanitary landfill with biogas and power generation
