Dr. Md. Tarek Uddin, PEng. is currently working as a
Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Islamic
University of Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has completed Doctor of
Engineering in Concrete Technology in 1997 from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan; Master of Engineering in Structural Engineering and Construction
in 1994 from Asian Institute of Technology , Bangkok, Thailand; and
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1989 from Bangladesh University of
Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has 25+ years of
working experience of which Eleven Years as Professor in Bangladesh, Four Years
as Associate Professor in Bangladesh; Four Years as Senior Researcher at Port
and Airport Research Institute, Japan; Three Years as Engineering Consultant at NEWJEC Inc., Japan; Six Months as Research Associate at AIT,
Bangkok, and Two Years and Six Months as Lecturer at Chittagong University of
Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh. He has extensive working
experience on research projects related to deterioration of concrete
structures, sustainability of construction materials, life cycle management,
and recycling of concrete. For his outstanding research contribution in the
field of concrete technology, he received Young Researcher Award from Japan
Concrete Institute in 2001. He received several local and international
research grants for research on cement based materials. He has been playing key
roles for organizing national and international seminars and workshops on
sustainability of construction materials. He received the best paper award in
the conference on Sustainability of Construction Materials and Technologies held at Kyoto, Japan in 2013. He is actively engaged as a reviewer of
several internationally renowned journals, such as ACI Materials Journal, ACI
Structural Journal, Journal of Construction and Building Materials, Journal of
Advanced Concrete Technology, etc.
Dr. Tarek served as the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering of University of Asia Pacific for Two Years and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Islamic University of Technology for Three and a Half Years. He also served as the Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program of the Department of Civil Engineering of University of Asia Pacific for Four Years.
In addition to the academic activities, he is actively engaged with professional organizations, such as Japan Concrete Institute; American Concrete Institute; Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh; and Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education. He is a registered professional engineer in Bangladesh and also actively engaged with consultancy works in the field of civil engineering. He served as the Chairman of Cement and Cementing Materials Sub-Committee of Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution for five years. He was a member of Evaluation Team associated with accreditation of some undergraduate programs in Bangladesh. He is a member of Sectorial Committee of Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education. He writes articles in the daily newspapers on concrete technology for public awareness related to quality of construction works as well as sustainability of construction materials. He delivered technical talks on Sustainability of Construction Materials and Earthquake Resilient Design of RC Structures in many local engineers’ gathering organized at several cities in Bangladesh.
He is a life Fellow of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, member of American Concrete Institute and Bangladesh Society for Total Quality Management.
